Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has landed in the center of a dispute concerning gender in sports 

 when her Italian adversary, Angela Carini, pulled out seconds into their match at the Paris Olympics.

Conservatives including former U.S. President Donald Trump and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni have responded negatively.

Khelif was kicked from the 2023 world championships following failing unidentified and opaque eligibility tests 

for women's competition from the now-banned International Boxing Association.

Khelif was assigned female at birth and it says so on her passport, which is the International Olympic Committee’s criterion for qualifying

for boxing due of the gap between the sport’s regulatory body and the IOC
